Background:AveryfeworganizationspublishsuicidedatainIran.Sinceanationalcomparativestudyonthepublishedsuicidedataisanimportantissue,thepresentstudyaimed to compareIranianMinistryofHealth(IMoH)datawithIranianStatisticalCenter(ISC)datain2004. Methods:Inthiscross-sectionalstudy,allthe suicidedatafortheIranianprovincesthatoriginatedfromIMoHandISCwereenteredintoSTATAsoftware.Inthenextstep,thepopulationnumberofeachprovincewas alsoaddedtothedatabaseandthen the rate of suicide was calculated byapplyingthe Poissonmodel. Findings:A total of3170and2486casesofsuicidewererecordedbyIMoHandISC,respectively.Inallthe provincesexceptIlam,Zanjan,Qom,Markazi,HamadanandYazd,therecordedsuicidesbyIMoHwerehigherthanthosebyISC.BasedonIMoHdata,IlamprovincehadthehighestrateofsuicidewhilstbasedonISCdata,Lorestanprovincehadthehighestrateofsuicide. Conclusion:ThehighersuiciderateinwesternprovincesofIranisinaccordancewiththeresultsofotherstudiesinIran.Furthermore,thedifferencesbetweenIMoHwithISCdatacanbeattributedtothemethodseachorganizationused for collecting thesuicidedata.Thesefindingsnotonlyareimportantforimplementing thesuicidepreventionplan,butalsourgetodesignandimplementacomprehensivesurveillancesystemforsuicidedatainIran.
