Abstract

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the most common and debilitating neurological diseases at the young age. Previous studies have suggested that nutrition as an environmental factor plays an important role in the development of the disease and its relapse. Therefore, this study aimed to identify inappropriate diet in patients with MS with relapses in the past year.
Methods: This study was conducted in a qualitative paradigm with a phenomenological approach in 2019. 15 patients with MS and 5 specialists from Rasht City, Iran, participated in the study. Participants were selected by purposeful sampling method with maximum diversity, and the unstructured interviews were done to the point of theoretical saturation. Data were analyzed using Attride-Stirling thematic analysis approach.
Findings: From the total interviews, three global themes were identified: 1- eating behaviors, 2- self-regulation in eating behaviors, and 3- malnutrition. Organizing themes for eating behaviors included “eating ready meals and inappropriate cooking”, for self-regulation in eating behaviors included “temptation, purpose, and meal management”, and for the malnutrition included “insufficiencies and excesses”.
Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the diet of people with MS with a history of relapsing, in the field of nutritional behaviors, self-regulation, and malnutrition has some deficiencies that the patients and specialists’ perceptions have an effective role in relapse of the disease. Accordingly, it seems that further research and development of educational interventions to improve the diet of these people is necessary.

Abstract

Background: Due to the prevalence of Internet use in most societies and the occurrence of a phenomenon called Internet dependence that has many consequences in people's lifestyles, it is necessary to examine the relevant or behavioral factors at a younger age. This study aimed to investigate Internet addiction and its relationship with various aspects of family functioning in adolescents.
Methods: The present study was a cross-sectional study (descriptive-analytical) in which, 604 adolescent students of Khomeini-Shahr schools, Iran, were selected through multistage cluster random sampling. Data collection tools included Young’s Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and McMaster’s Family Assessment Device (FAD) questionnaires. Correlation test and regression analysis were used to evaluate the correlation between the data and the ratio of chance. Data analysis was performed with SPSS software.
Findings: A study of the relationship between family functions and Internet addiction showed that almost all aspects of family functions including communication, role, affective responsiveness, affective involvement, behavior control, and general functioning were significantly and positively related to Internet addiction (P < 0.050). In examining the chance ratio, linear regression analysis showed that only the ability of affective responsiveness [odds ratio (OR) = 1.19], affective involvement (OR = 1.08), and family functioning (OR = 1.07) had a significant chance ratio in Internet addiction (P < 0.010).
Conclusion: Considering the significant relationship between different dimensions of family functions and Internet addiction, the higher the ability of performing a role, affective responsiveness, affective involvement, and behavior control in families is, the lower the Internet addiction among students will be. Therefore, family functioning can be a significant explanation for the behavior of Internet addiction in adolescents.

Abstract

Background: Substance-related disorders are recognized as a significant health concern in all societies, with individuals facing public health challenges. This study was aimed to assess the impact of an emotion regulation-focused educational program on the overall health status of individuals undergoing methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) for addiction.
Methods: This single-blind randomized clinical trial study was conducted in 2022 on 48 patients with opioid abuse undergoing MMT at the Center for Addiction Harm Reduction in Isfahan City, Iran. The participants were randomly assigned to either the intervention group (n = 24) or the control group (n = 24). The intervention involved six training sessions focused on emotion regulation over a three-week period for the intervention group. Data analysis was performed using paired t-test, independent samples t-test, and chi-square test with SPSS statistical software. In this study, the P-value was considered significant at the level of less than 0.05.
Findings: The results of the paired samples t-test showed that in the intervention group, the average scores of the general health level decreased significantly after the intervention (P < 0.001), while the changes in the control group were not significant. The results of the independent samples t-test showed that the average scores of the general health level in the intervention and control groups were not significantly different before the intervention, but were significant after the intervention (P < 0.001).
Conclusion: According to the results of the present study, the educational program based on emotion regulation plays a crucial role in enhancing the overall health of patients receiving MMT. Therefore, it is advisable to implement this educational program for patients undergoing MMT.
