Background: Considering the importance of the psychological and personality dimensions of the formation of addiction, as well as the importance of cognitive therapies during the abandonment of drugs, which unfortunately is now neglected in most drug addiction centers, this study aimed to assess the effectiveness of group schema therapy on maladaptive schemas domains of disconnection-rejection and impaired autonomy-performance in men under methadone maintenance treatment.Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with pretest and posttest, as well as control group. The statistical society included all the men receiving treatment for substance abuse since April 2016, in addiction treatment clinics in Isfahan City, Iran. An addiction treatment clinic was selected via available sampling, then based on purposeful sampling and inclusion criteria, 30 participants were selected. The participants were randomly assigned into two experimental and control groups. The experimental group received 10 sessions of schema therapy weekly, with duration of 90 minutes. The study instrument was Young schema questionnaire (YSQ-L2). The obtained data were analyzed using multivariable covariance via SPSS software.Findings: Group schema therapy had significant effect on all the dimensions of disconnection-rejection and its subscales (P < 0.001 for all), as well as impaired autonomy-performance and its subscales (P < 0.001 for all), in men under methadone maintenance treatment.Conclusion: According to the results, we suggest that schema therapy can be used in substance abuse treatment centers, along with other methods to control addiction, and to treat psychological problems of people undergoing methadone treatment plan.
