Background: A marital bond is established through marriage and the formation of a family. Maintaining stable sexual and emotional relationships is one of the most significant concerns for every family. One key indicator of couples' satisfaction with one another is the quality of their sexual lives. The present study aims to examine the effects of cognitive-behavioral family therapy, based on the sexual health model, on the quality of women's sexual lives.
Methods: The present research employed a semi-experimental design, utilizing a pre-test and post-test approach with a control group. The statistical population for this study comprised all couples who visited the welfare centers in Shahrekord City, Iran, in 2022. A total of 15 couples were selected for the study using convenience sampling methods. The participants were divided into intervention and control groups. Members of the intervention group received nine sessions of 90-minute cognitive-behavioral family counseling based on the sexual health model. The research instruments included a demographic and clinical questionnaire consisting of 17 questions, a questionnaire assessing the quality of women's sexual life [Sexual Quality of Life-Female (SQOL-F)] with 18 questions, and a questionnaire evaluating the quality of life for men [Sexual Quality of Life-Male (SQOL-M)] containing 11 questions. Data analysis was conducted using paired t-test and chi-square test in SPSS software.
Findings: Based on the findings and statistical analysis, the average age of participants in the test group was 36.23 years, while in the control group, it was 35.23 years. Additionally, the average age of spouses in the test group was 40.29 years, compared to 40.74 years in the control group. In terms of demographic characteristics, there was no significant difference between the two groups. Therefore, it can be concluded that cognitive-behavioral family therapy, based on the sexual health model, positively impacted the quality of sexual life for couples. The quality of sexual life in the intervention group was significantly better than that of the control group two weeks and two months after the intervention (P < 0.05).
Conclusion: Cognitive-behavioral family therapy, grounded in the sexual health model, enhances intimacy between partners and fosters clear communication regarding sexual needs and desires, ultimately improving the quality of sexual life.
