Abstract: (19 Views)
Background: Mental health literacy plays a crucial role as a facilitator in the process of seeking help and using mental health services in the elderly and, accordingly, in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. Therefore, the present study was conducted with the aim of determining the status of mental health literacy and its related factors among the elderly of Kermanshah City, Iran, in 2024.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on people aged 60 years and older in Kermanshah City. The samples were collected using multi-stage random sampling method. The data collection tool included demographic information and a questionnaire on mental health literacy (including knowledge, attitude, and behavior dimensions) in the elderly. Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression tests were used to examine the relationships.
Findings: A total of 400 subjects (mean age: 67.06 ± 7.02 years, 52% men) were included in the study. The mean mental health literacy score of the study participants was 28.37 ± 8.88 (range: 10 to 50). The Pearson correlation coefficient test showed that there was a positive and significant correlation between the dimensions of mental health literacy, including knowledge, attitude, and behavior (P < 0.001). Multiple linear regression also showed that people with higher education and retired people had higher mental health literacy scores (P < 0.05).
Conclusion: The results of this study highlight the need to attempt to increase mental health literacy among Iranian elderly. Therefore, in the design of interventions, attention should be paid to the lower education level and unemployed people, which will lead to the improvement of mental health literacy in the elderly.
