Abstract:   (25 Views)
Background: Depression is recognized as the main cause of disability in the elderly worldwide. Digital platforms are a valuable resource for reaching individuals who may be hesitant to seek in-person assistance from mental health experts due to various situational or personal barriers. The purpose of this research was to development, implementation, and efficacy evaluation a program that uses a mobile app to prevent depression in older adults. The program is based on Gelberg-Andersen behavioral model.
Methods: The current research was a quasi-experimental study and was conducted among 80 elderly people covered by the pension funds of Kermanshah City by random selection and allocation in two intervention and control groups (40 people each) in 2022. The intervention program was developed based on needs assessment by using Gelberg-Andersen behavioral model and some of steps of Intervention Mapping approach. Data before and two months after the intervention was collected for evaluation and analyzed with SPSS-16 software including Independent Samples t Test and Paired-Samples T Test. The effect size of the intervention was calculated according to Cohen's d index for the efficacy evaluation.
Findings: After the program implementation, the average scores for attitude (19.23 ± 5.04 to 22.93 ± 4.79), self-efficacy (73.86 ± 10.48 to 78.86 ± 8.12), and help-seeking (33.90 ± 6.98 to 39.20 ± 6.04) significantly increased among the elderly in the intervention group (P < 0.05). However, there was no significant impact on psychological distress, barriers, and depression (P > 0.05). The effect size was estimated to be "large" for the determinants of attitude, self-efficacy, and help-seeking, and "small" for psychological distress, barriers, and depression.
Conclusion: The implemented program was effective in improving the score of attitude towards help-seeking, self-efficacy towards receiving mental health services, and help-seeking behavior. Using a mobile application based on the Gelberg-Andersen behavioral model, can be used as a basis for developing and implementing intervention programs to prevent depression among the elderly.
