Background: From the point of view of cognitive ergonomics, behavior design based on the regulation of emotions is very important, especially among sensitive and vulnerable employees in terms of physical and psychological aspects. Considering the limited number of studies conducted in this field, especially from the perspective of cognitive ergonomics, the present study aims to investigate the effect of emotion regulation on the reduction of physical symptoms caused by irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) among oil industry employees.
Methods: The current study is applied in nature and employs a quasi-experimental design, specifically a pre-test/post-test format with a control group and a three-month follow-up conducted in a double-blind manner. The study involved 22 individuals with IBS working in the oil industry in Shiraz City, Iran, in 2023. Greenberg's method was utilized to implement Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), while the Patient Health Questionnaire-15 (PHQ-15) was employed to assess physical symptom disorders. The data were analyzed using SPSS software.
Findings: The differences in scores for the variable of physical symptoms, based on the main effects of time and the interactive effects of time, were significant across the pre-test, post-test, and follow-up stages (P < 0.05). Additionally, the average scores for the physical symptoms variable in the experimental group were 16.72 in the pre-test, 12.72 in the post-test, and 15.27 in the follow-up.
Conclusion: Based on the findings of the study, EFT has proven effective in reducing physical symptom scores in the post-test among the participating workers. Therefore, it is recommended that the EFT method be implemented to enhance the emotional regulation abilities of employees, particularly among vulnerable groups, concerning their physical and mental well-being.
