Abstract: (1045 Views)
Background: Although 12-hour and 8-hour shift schedules are common in Iranian petrochemical industries, each of these systems may cause adverse health consequences among shift workers. The main purpose of this study was to compare shift work-related health problems among petrochemical employees working in 12-hour and 8-hour shift schedulesMethods: This cross-sectional study was carried out at 21 petrochemical companies. Study population consisted of 1630 workers, including 1034 8-hour and 596 12-hour shift workers. Data on personal details, work shift, and adverse health effects were collected by an anonymous questionnaire. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS11.5 at a significance level of 5%.Findings: The mean of shift working experience for 12-hour and 8-hour shift workers were estimated to be 3.80 ± 3.65 and 8.24 ± 6.92 years, respectively. The results showed that health problems among 12-hour shift workers were more prevalent than 8-hour shift workers. The differences were significant in gastrointestinal and musculoskeletal disorders (P < 0.05).Conclusion: Although 12-hour shift workers were younger and had lower job experience, the prevalence rates of health-related problems were higher among them as compared to 8-hour shift workers.
