Abstract: (945 Views)
Background: This study explored the effects of 6-year lifestyle modification interventions on elevating health among taxi drivers in the city of Isfahan, Iran. Methods: Isfahan Healthy Heart Program (IHHP) was a community-based interventional study aiming to modify cardiovascular risk factors and elevate lifestyle. The present study was conducted on 117 taxi drivers from 2001 to 2007 simultaneous with the first and third phases of IHHP. Subjects were randomly selected from 6175 and 4719 people (in the first and third phases, respectively) from general population. They took a course of several interventions for prevention of cardiovascular diseases and modifying lifestyle for 6 years. All participants were studied for demographic factors and physical factors including blood pressure. Furthermore, blood samples were taken to assess biochemical factors. Findings: While the mean age of drivers did not significantly change between 2001 and 2007, nutritional index and activity significantly reduced (P < 0.0001). The prevalence of hypertension in the first and third phases was 15.1% and 12.1%, respectively. The rate of hypertension did not have a significant change, but the prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia significantly reduced from 42.9% to 27.4% (P = 0.01). Changes in other risk factors were not significant. Conclusion: With respect to the importance of the job of taxi drivers and the effects of interventions on reducing cardiovascular risk factors, and in order to expand and stabilize the interventions, health policy makers are recommended to implement programs to institutionalize these interventions to prevent and control cardiovascular diseases.
