Background:One of the most important indicators in public health is earlier traits of new born specially birth's weight. The Aim of this study was determined effects of biological and psychological traits mothers on low birth weight in Isfahan province. Methods: This research performed on 910 new born and delivered mothers of Isfahan province in 2009. According to the percentage of population in each of the cities of Isfahan province, was used stratified and cluster sampling. The data was gathered by a questionnaire of evaluate the biological cognitive and psychosocial characteristics of mothers and Enrich marital satisfaction test. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics and logistic regression model inSPSS16 software. Findings: The results of this research showed that low birth weight(less than 2500 g) frequency was 9. 5%. Unwanted pregnancies, pregnancies in less 20 years old and more than 35years old were 38.7% 15/6% and 22% respectively. The mothers exposed to cigarette smoke were 38.9%. The average of weight increased was 9 kg and also onset of hypertension was 33% during pregnancy.History of abortion and bleeding were 26.7% and 31.9% respectively.Parents-relative and cesarean deliveries were 21/1 % and 29.7% respectively. Logistic regression showed that marital dissatisfaction, hypertension, employing during pregnancy, weight gain less than 5 kg, height mother and pregnancy below the age of 20 years old were significant associated with low birth weight. Conclusion: Results of this study indicated that some of the biological and psychological traits of mothers effected on low birth weight. Therefore the biological and psychological traits of mothers must be more attention in low birth weight preventive programs in Isfahan province.
