Background: The prevalence of depression in women is almost twice that of men, and it is anticipated that in 2020, depression will be the most common and costly disease. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to determinate the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) on depression and self-esteem in women with major depressive disorder (MDD) in Isfahan City, Iran.Methods: This was an experimental study with a single case design. Among the women hospitalized in Farabi hospital due to major depressive disorder, 5 were chosen via random sampling. After three weeks of medication therapy, the patients individually received 10 sessions of acceptance and commitment therapy. Data collection tools were Beck depression questionnaire and Rosenberg self-esteem questionnaire. At the beginning of the study, and at the sixth and tenth sessions, questionnaires were completed for all the patients. The follow-up stage was done after two months from the end of the intervention. To analyze the data, descriptive method of process analysis, drawing diagrams, and clinical improvement index were used.Findings: The level of depression among five patients decrease at posttest (amelioration of 84.76%) and follow-up (amelioration of 88.24%) stages. Besides, self-esteem score increased at posttest (amelioration of 63.44%) and follow-up (amelioration of 69.18%) stages.Conclusion: The research findings demonstrated the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy on decreasing depression and increasing self esteem in major depression disorder. It seems that acceptance and commitment therapy can be used as a treatment in patients with major depressive disorder.
