Abstract:   (127 Views)
Background: Inadequate activity and inactivity account for 20% of deaths from cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), cancer, and diabetes. At any age, lifestyle changes such as physical activity and exercise are crucial in reducing deaths and increasing life expectancy. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of educational interventions based on health education theories and models in promoting physical activity in Iran.
Methods: Relevant keywords were searched in databases including Magiran, Irandoc, Scientific Information Database (SID), Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Studies published between January, 2011, and December, 2021, were extracted. After screening, 20 articles meeting the inclusion criteria were examined.
Findings: The research included 9 semi-experimental studies, 8 clinical trials, and 3 experimental studies conducted on various age and gender groups. Interventions lasted from 4 to 12 weeks, with follow-ups between 1 to 6 months. Results showed improvements in physical activity in the constructs of awareness, attitude, perceived sensitivity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, self-efficacy, social norms, enabling factors, and behavioral intention, perceived behavior control, stages of change, environmental factors, behavioral ability, outcome expectation, outcome value, and observational learning.
Conclusion: Different models and theories positively impact promoting physical activity and healthy behaviors. The meta-theoretical model and self-efficacy construct were significant in enhancing physical activity across different age and gender groups. Increasing effective educational interventions in this field is recommended
