Background: The Family Physician Program is one of the most important efforts of the health system aimed at increasing access to quality healthcare services, reducing treatment costs, minimizing out-of-pocket payments, and expanding the scope of population coverage. Therefore, the present study sought to examine the achievements and challenges of implementing this program.
Methods: The study was conducted as a systematic review through a comprehensive search in various electronic databases, including PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Embase, as well as national databases such as Scientific Information Database (SID), IranDoc, and Islamic World Science Citation Center (ISC). Keywords such as "family physician program" and "family physician" were used to identify relevant studies published between 2012 and 2024. Rayan software was utilized for data management.
Findings: From a total of 348 initial studies related to the research title, 56 articles with inclusion criteria were selected for analysis. The findings from the selected articles categorized the achievements of the Family Physician Program in three main themes: improvement of health and treatment indicators, continuity of care, and patient satisfaction. Furthermore, the challenges were classified into four key areas: management and planning, facilities and resources, staff satisfaction, and training.
Conclusion: While the Family Physician Program has yielded significant achievements in the field of health promotion, numerous challenges persist in its implementation, underscoring the urgent need for policymakers and planners to address these barriers and expand the program to effectively achieve health equity.
