Background: Emotional relationships are an important part of most young people's lives. Sometimes, these relationships manifest themselves in a non-compatible way accompanied by harm. Therefore, the present study aimed at compilation of a training-consultation package of getting rid of emotionally abusive relationships and its validation.
Methods: This qualitative study was conducted using a two-step content analysis method including scoping review and interview. First, in the scoping review step, all retrieved articles related to the research objective were compiled according to the search strategy. Then, in the interview section, girls with abusive emotional relationships and experts in this field were interviewed. The interviews were conducted using a semi-structured method and purposeful sampling, and reached saturation with 10 experts and 9 girls. Validation was performed using the Lincoln and Guba method. Finally, after determining the categories, the training package was prepared in 9 sessions and validated using the Lawshe method.
Findings: The analysis of texts and interviews led to the emergence of six main categories and twenty subcategories: family factors (strict and neglectful parenting style, clinical symptoms of parents, reconstruction of the relationship with the parent), individual factors (need for attachment and identity, dependent personality), social factors (peer pressure), emotional damage (negative emotion towards self and others, damage to self-esteem, depressive and anxiety symptoms, proximity seeking, and emotion scheme), behavioral damage (impulsive and jealousy-based behavior), and cognitive damage (mental review of negative memories, negative judgments towards self and others). The minimum and maximum content validity index (CVI) for each session was 0.8 and 1, respectively.
Conclusion: Some family, individual, and social factors cause people to stay in abusive relationships, and lack of awareness and inability to leave these relationships leads to emotional, cognitive, and behavioral harm. Therefore, it is necessary to implement educational and counseling programs to prevent and reduce harms as a priority for educational and counseling centers and the policy-making area of the country's health system.
